Notes:
Men of the Corps heard the roaring Great Falls of the Missouri before they saw them. Unable to pass, they were forced to carry their hand-hewn dugout canoes for an extended distance. The canoes were very heavy and rollers were made, even sails attached to help move them along. A bear claw necklace surrounds the scene.
