Description

Captain Meriwether Lewis, who had been the personal secretary of Thomas Jefferson, was asked by him to lead the "Corps of Discovery." The President wrote, "Capt. Lewis is brave, prudent, habituated to the woods, familiar with Indian Manners & character. He is not regularly educated, but he possesses a great mass of accurate observation on all the subjects of nature which present themselves." Here he stoops to examine a Squaw Bush. In the background is a Gray Wolf. Both were documented by the Corps. The border of feathers represents the many Native Americans that befriended the Corps.
